Instead, the movie is about a group of friends having a party when the monster comes out of nowhere.
One of the main reasons why Cloverfield is one of the best Kaiju horror movies of this decade is that it’s a found footage film, which makes it distinctly different from most other kaiju movies. This style can be worn out in recent years, but since Cloverfield was released before Paranormal Activity and its ilk, it still felt fresh. That’s why I rate Cloverfield among the best Kaiju horror films of 2022.
Another film that deserves a mention on this list is Colossal. While the film’s story doesn’t take place on Earth, it is one of the most beautiful kaiju films ever made. Director Bong Joon-ho injects it with humor while making it more than a mere rehash of Godzilla.

This sequel to the 2002 classic is packed with fun destruction, despite the fact that Mothra is a bit overused at this point in the series. It’s a solid Godzilla movie, but the storyline is absurd. A prophecy predicts the end of the Earth, and Godzilla shows up and starts wrecking stuff. It can also be harmed by ordinary military weapons, and it usually runs away. While the movie remains a decent popcorn-muncher, the plot is a little too long, and the characters don’t hold together.
The action sequences are exciting, but sometimes the scares feel overly long. Godzilla blows apart one attacker with his dorsal spines, and he loses a salvo of explosive atomic breath at the other.
